Lake Ahquabi State Park is full of frogs and other wildlife, with a long trail loop (approximately 4 miles) around the lake. In addition to hiking trails, there is a sand beach and bridge for fishing. If you’re going to swim, be sure to check out the DNR website for water safety levels.

Banner Lakes at Summerset State Park is the youngest state park, built around an old coal mine. A popular mountain biking destination, there are also hiking trails and fishing.

Badger Creek State Recreation Area – Van Meter, Iowa

Badger Creek State Recreation Area is a popular fishing destination, with a large lake. There are no designated trails but there is wooded space to explore as well. Every year in mid-July, there is a large sunflower field that is popular for taking pictures  (details below for the 2017 field location).

Island Park feels more like a campground, with a playground in the middle, I don’t think I’d go back just to play. The river running nearby has a metal bridge going over and you can see the dam.
